We Replace Failing CertainTeed Siding with James Hardie

Most likely you have heard of fiber cement siding. It is a great siding material that has many advantages and is very durable. However, not all fiber cement products and brands are equally well made and long-lasting.

There is one brand in particular we want to address here. It is called CertainTeed fiber cement siding. This siding has been installed on many homes throughout the US, including on plenty of homes in Colorado.

Unfortunately, it has now been a part of a class-action lawsuit.

Do you know if you have CertainTeed fiber cement siding on your home? Does your home have cracked fiber cement siding? Are there vertical cracks on the laps of your siding? Then chances are that you have faulty CertainTeed fiber cement siding.

CertainTeed is NOT James Hardie Siding

Many homeowners frequently mistake their CertainTeed fiber cement siding for James Hardie siding and it is important to distinguish them. CertainTeed was involved in a class-action lawsuit, James Hardie never has been and does not have those problems with cracking and failing.

The CertainTeed fiber cement siding class-action lawsuit is now closed and the filing deadline was August 11, 2020. They reached a settlement after claims had been made that the siding was defective and did not perform as promised.

How do you know if the siding on your home was part of this lawsuit? One way to determine this are the product control and identification numbers found on the reverse side of the siding. Furthermore, the CertainTeed WeatherBoards have a unique fingerprint in the wood grain that can help identify the affected siding.

Additionally, if you have documentation from your purchase or the repair of your siding, that may have the necessary information on it as well. You could also contact the contractor who installed your siding to find out if you have the affected siding.

If you owned a home and had this siding installed as of September 30, 2013 you were eligible to be part of the settlement. Depending on the age of the siding and the extent of the damage to the siding different amounts of money were paid to replace the siding.

The cracking CertainTeed fiber cement siding was manufactured with fly ash and has become very brittle over the years. Stated in the class action settlement is that if 5% of the wall has been damaged the homeowner was entitled to having the whole wall replaced.

Why would we need to replace the entire wall? We would NOT be able to complete a lap for lap repair but would have to remove all of the faulty product and replace it with James Hardie. We can only do corner to corner, top to bottom siding replacement.

The siding will get more and more cracks if the issue is not addressed. The damage becomes worse because of the settling of the home over the years and due to the Colorado climate year-round. These factors make it impossible to ignore the failing siding and they have to be addressed.

What can you do if you missed the deadline for the settlement? Unfortunately, there really is not anything you as a homeowner can do. You will need to eventually replace all the siding on your home to keep it from being damaged further and more severely.

We have helped many homeowners remove and replace their cracked CertainTeed siding. It may be necessary to do so for a real estate transaction for example because the siding would not pass the inspection. Caulking and paint could only be a temporary solution but will not fix the problem.
