Is the Exterior of Your Home Looking Faded and Cracked?
Do you know when the last time your home was painted? Have you been staring at the same cracks and lines on the siding for years and wonder, “What should I do to my home? Should I paint it? Should I repair the siding?” Those are common questions from our customers in the field. Our answers may vary because it depends on the condition of the exterior of your home. Colorado Siding Repair specializes in siding and exterior paint and we are here to guide you through the process.
Do I Need New Siding or Just New Paint?
The first question we would ask is, “How old is your home?” When was the last time it was painted? When was the last time the siding was replaced? Your home should be painted every 6-10 years depending on the quality of the exterior paint. A lot of wood composite siding products that were installed in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s only have a 20-year life expectancy, which is why it’s so important to protect your home with regular painting. Vinyl siding, composite wood siding, cedar siding, and fiber cement siding products each have their own product lifespan. Not all types of siding are created equal. Colorado weather and the elements can be pretty harsh and we have even replaced the siding on homes built less than 10 years ago.
Depending on the answers to the questions above, your home might not need all its siding replaced. We would recommend scheduling an inspection with us to determine the extent of the long-term wear and tear of your home exterior, especially if you have specific areas on your home that you are concerned about. If you are noticing areas where the siding and trim is swelling, cracking, and/or rotting that is a tell-tale sign that the integrity of the home exterior is starting to fail. No amount of new exterior paint will fix the issue.
After a thorough inspection, our team will help you discuss your options and the extent of your siding damage. The most common outcomes would be the following:
(1) All new siding and trim for the house, including paint,
(2) One or two walls fully replaced and the whole house painted to match,
(3) All new trim and paint for the house to protect vulnerable areas,
(4) All new paint on the exterior of the home.
Can I Paint to Match My Existing Siding?
Yes. Colorado Siding Repair only uses Sherwin Williams® Duration paint on our homes. If you have a house color that we don’t have a match to an existing color, we use Sherwin Williams® to match the color. Let us help you design the home exterior of your dreams.
Can I Paint my Vinyl Siding?
A quick Google search on this topic and you will get varied answers. But mostly, the answers will say Yes. We have had customers tell us that their previous house painter told them Yes. The real answer is No. No, you cannot paint vinyl siding. Unlike wood or fiber cement, vinyl is not porous. In the harsh elements the paint will contract and expand on top of the vinyl siding. This will warp the vinyl siding and within two years or less, your siding will look like a broken deck of cards. If you don’t like the color of your vinyl siding, we recommend replacing the siding! We do not recommend painting your vinyl siding and we will give you alternative options to protect your home.
Can We Just Paint and Replace the Damaged Boards or Laps Instead of the Whole Wall?
The siding on your exterior walls are all connected in a system. Since we aren’t the original builder of the home, we don’t know what might be underneath the damaged siding. Damaged exterior siding is usually a symptom of a greater issue within the wall. Therefore, board for board repairs are not a long-term solution to protecting your home from moisture and ongoing damage.
Colorado Siding Repair guarantees its work on full wall siding replacement. When replacing the entire wall we wrap the whole wall in the Hardie moisture wrap to ensure the whole wall is protected and then we install the new siding on top. Your exterior siding works as a system and each wall needs to be repaired and replaced in entirety to ensure maximum protection against the elements for years to come.
