Types of Siding

There are four major types of siding you can choose from. They are quite different from each other with various attributes, advantages, and disadvantages. Choosing the right siding for your home can feel overwhelming as there are so many options. We will guide you through the process and make it exciting to choose and cut through the confusion.

Composite Siding

Composite siding is made from a combination of different materials instead of being made out of one single material. Wood is often used in composite siding and in the past, siding that contained asbestos was also quite common.

Today, fiber cement siding is the most popular composite siding option. This siding is very durable and requires almost no maintenance. It is made out of a combination of cement, cellulose fibers, water, and silica. This creates a very durable, long-lasting siding product.

Colorado Siding Repair specializes in James Hardie fiber cement siding, the most recommended siding in the US. This premium product is ideal for the Colorado climate with its fluctuating temperatures. This siding holds up very well during hail and snow storms, as it does not swell, crack or warp.

Furthermore, fiber cement is resistant to pests, fungus, mold, and UV damage. Another huge advantage is that it is fire resistant and will not burn. James Hardie fiber cement comes with a 30-year product and 15-year finish warranty, which is hard to beat.

When you choose James Hardie fiber cement siding you have a wide variety of styles, textures and colors to pick from. This siding looks beautiful and you can design your home’s exterior to look amazing and unique.

Vinyl Siding

The other very popular siding choice is vinyl siding. It has a lower upfront cost than other sidings making it relatively inexpensive. If you are looking for a budget friendly option, this might be right for you.

Vinyl siding is quite versatile and is available in a variety of colors, textures and styles. It is easy to maintain and only needs to be washed off with a garden hose every so often. It does not need to be painted. That also means that you cannot change the color but have to stick with the one you pick originally. That being said, there are many great colors to choose from.

In comparison to other siding options vinyl is not the most durable choice but it can last for many years. The siding can warp and fade over time as well as be damaged by hail. It may have to be repaired or replaced sooner than other, more durable siding. If that is the case, vinyl will no longer be the most cost-effective option in the long run.

Vinyl siding will not rot and usually comes with a good warranty. The material is lightweight and will not trap moisture that would lead to mold and mildew. If you choose insulated vinyl siding it can make quite a difference for your utility bill and the energy efficiency of your home.

Wood Siding

Wood siding is still considered one of the classic siding types. It looks beautiful and is very durable, when well maintained. To be well maintained it does have to be stained and sealed regularly or it will deteriorate and rot. The cost of maintenance adds to the higher upfront cost as well.

LP SmartSide composite wood siding is a great option if you want the look of natural wood siding but one that is more resistant to the elements. It also requires less maintenance than cedar siding but it does have to be painted regularly.

The composite wood siding is more resistant to damage from water and pests than traditionally cedar wood siding. LP SmartSide is relatively light and can be partially replaced if necessary. This composite wood siding has a lower upfront cost than cedar wood siding and could be a great option for your home.

Metal Siding

Metal siding is the fourth type of siding available for your home. The two kinds of metal you can choose from are steel and aluminum siding. The big advantage of metal siding is that it will not mold, rot or fade. Additionally, it requires little maintenance and is fire resistant.

Steel is durable and heavy which makes it resistant to impact but it can be dented, for example by hail. Furthermore, it is rather expensive to install, especially considering the rising price of metal in the last few years.

Aluminum siding does not rust but is quite easy to dent. It does not stand up to hail very well. It comes pre-colored but it can be painted later as well. However, it is not the most cost-effective siding on the market.
